The invention of FDM technology
FDM technology was invented more than 20 years ago from the founder of Stratasys, Scott Crump, and from then on the company has maintained the leadership in the revolution of 3D printing, developing a range of systems for the large manufacturing sector, designers, engineers, teachers and other professionals.
How FDM technology works
3D printers, with FDM technology construct pieces by overlapping layers from the bottom up through heating and extrusion of a thermoplastic filament. The process is simple.
Preliminary Operations:
Thanks to the appropriate software, the CAD 3D file is broken down in layers and positioned for calculating the process of thermoplastic extrusion as well as the necessary supporting materials.
Production:
The 3D printer heats the thermoplastic until a semi-liquid material is obtained. This material is deposited in very little beads during the extrusion process. If a support is necessary, the 3D printer deposits a removable material that serves as supporting structure.
Post-processing:
When the supporting material is removed or dissolved in water and detergent, the piece is ready to be used.
